Volunteers are at the heart of our work – we couldn’t do what we do without the time, care and commitment of our fabulous volunteers. Home-Start Volunteers are usually parents themselves or have had parenting experience, and they choose to share their time, friendship, parenting skills and experience because they understand the demands and stresses of having a young family. All volunteers are carefully selected, trained and supported for their work with families.

Volunteer Training

The Volunteer Training Course usually takes place 1 session of 3 hours per week over a 8 week period. We run courses regularly throughout the year. Please get in touch if you would like some further information or to request an application form.

Topics covered include:

  • Family Values and Attitudes
  • Family Life and Supporting Parents
  • Parents and their children
  • Child Protection
  • Listening
  • Confidentiality
  • Home-Visiting
  • Role of a Home-Start Volunteer

We also offer a programme of ongoing training for all our volunteers, covering specific subjects which are relevant to family support. Volunteer meetings take place once per month and usually last 2 hours. On occasion a training input may be delivered over a half or full day.
